TROMSØ

Where your arctic adventure begins

Tromsø is located 350 km inside the Arctic Circle, on the same latitude as northern Alaska. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. In January the mean temperature is only minus 3º Celcius.

In the early 1900s, the city was the starting point for a number of hunting, research and tourist expeditions to the Arctic regions. Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen started their polar expeditions from here. This led to the city being known as the “Gateway to the Arctic”.

Tromsø hosts the world’s northernmost university which was opened in 1972. The students keep the nightlife tradition of the city alive. Most of the bars and nightclubs are located along the main street, Storgata, making it easy to check out several places in one evening.

The city is known for its vibrant nightlife and a great number of restaurants cooking the fresh ingredients of the Arctic. Tromsø’s multi-cultural community contributes to the culinary delights pleasing the palates of the guests with local food.

Tromsø has many to offer to its visitors but two natural phenomena always precede the others: the midnight sun and the magnificent Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
